Toronto AIDS Conference-not the place for basic science

Over the years the International AIDS conference has moved farther away from basic science.

In the Toronto Star, it was reported that Robert Gallo, a pre-eminent AIDS researcher, has stated that the International AIDS conference is no place for basic science. Gallo was quoted as saying, "What I worry about at this meeting is that there is a certain degradation of science (by) the circus quality and the lack of importance of that which is the only way the problem is going to be solved." Interesting thoughts considering that many of the current treatments are not available to most of the world's AIDS sufferers. What is the point in finding a cure if most people will be denied it?
