OK, I see what you are saying. Actually, Mbeki of South Africa made a similar point. Not to defend the way the South African government handled the AIDS crisis, but Mbeki tried to make the point that people who were HIV-positive were actually dying of diseases of poverty-e.g. TB. So although their immune systems were compromised, if they hadn't been poor, they probably wouldn't have died of things like TB.
